Grandmother, mother, wife, farmer, businesswoman and inspiration to us all, Debbie Athearn is someone we honor every day — and especially on her birthday, June 4 (just two weeks after Jim’s).
Sweethearts since high school, the two were young parents when they ventured into farming here on Meshacket Road in 1975. In 1981, they opened the farmstand — and after 40 years Debbie is still opening it, literally, every morning, working side by side with staffers to make sure only the freshest and highest-quality produce makes it to the sales floor for our customers.
Debbie’s warmth, intelligence and unfailing good humor, along with her strong work ethic and keen sense of fairness, have made her a beloved community member who’s set a powerful example for countless employees, customers and business partners over the years.
And that’s not counting the Athearn family, who all got together recently for an informal group photo (we’re looking forward to an updated Alison Shaw portrait soon).
You can see more pictures and read about Debbie, Jim, the Athearns and Morning Glory Farm in the Vineyard Gazette’s recent profile, The First Family of Vineyard Farming.
Meanwhile, we hope you’ll join us in wishing Debbie a wonderful birthday with many happy returns.
