Purchased from Charley at Village Power Equipment in Berlin, Mass., our International Harvester Hydro 84 has its strengths and its weaknesses.
The hydrostatic drive provides a continuously variable transmission that allows us to match the ground speed to the job being done. It’s our favored tractor for haying and the EZ off loader gets low to moderate use. The engine, with its underslung exhaust, is too smoky to ride a transplanter behind and a poor stabilizer bar setup makes it unsuitable for bedded vegetable work. But it does well pulling the compost spreader and fertilizer spreader.
The Hydro 84 has had its share of mishaps with Simon in the saddle: a blown transmission on one occasion, and a road-speed collision with a pine tree when the steering failed in 2004.
