1.0       Introduction

1.1       This Position Guide defines the basic function, reporting relationships, authority, duties, and performance evaluation of the Herb Chief at Morning Glory Farm (MGF).

2.0       Position Overview

2.1           In charge of planning, coordinating, and controlling the day-to-day herb activities to ensure a profitable operation.

3.0       Reporting Relationships

3.1       The Herb Manager reports to the Field Manager 
3.2       Herb Crews report to the Herb Chief.

4.0       Authority

4.1           Planning, requisitioning, and assigning supplies, tools, and labor, as necessary to complete scheduled herb operations.
4.2           Developing and enforcing operations standards and plans, in collaboration with the Field Manager
4.3           Training, evaluating, and recommending to the Field Manager, the hiring and/or firing of any herb crew within MGF’s set policies and procedures.

5.0       Requirements

5.1       Education: High School Diploma and training in Herb Horticulture.
5.2       Experience: Atleast 2 years experience of herb work; planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and sales preferably at MGF.
5.3       Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: This position requires a people person with supervisory skills, the ability to plan, direct, and control operations, and working knowledge of herb varieties, growing needs, and techniques.

 

6.0           Responsibilities

6.1           Establishing herb operations needs and developing a plan to satisfy them promptly and cost effectively.
6.2           Overseeing the day-to-day smooth-running of herb operations; participating in the hiring and training of herb crews, as needed and directing and supervising herb activities to achieve the set productivity and quality goals, while observing environmental standards.
6.3           Monitoring the herb plant inventory and operations, detecting inefficient and unsafe work procedures and problems, and initiating corrective action.
6.4           Maintaining all work status reports and schedules to keep the Field Manager informed of any problem that may impact the scheduled completion and overall cost of operations.

 

7.0           Duties

7.1           Monitoring and recording herb planting conditions and needs and interfacing with the field and greenhouse managers in scheduling any required seeding, transplanting, watering, weeding, and harvesting processes.
7.2           Establishing and documenting the planting specificationsand growing conditions for all planned herb operations.
7.3           Assigning scheduled herb operations and supervising any assigned crews in ensuring that work is done according to set quality standards and procedures.
7.4           Requisitioning and assigning herb supplies, tools, and required equipment to facilitate the safe and profitable execution of assigned tasks.
7.5           Monitoring the germination and growth success of herbs with respect to bugs, disease, weeds, water needs, etc and taking action accordingly.
7.6           Reviewing Herb work assignments for schedule changes, supplies delays, and down time and taking corrective action to minimize waste of resources.
7.7           Monitoring herb crew job performance (whenever crews are assigned), identifying areas of weakness, and conducting on-site training to upgrade employee skills with regard to efficient methods of work, safety regulations, and identification of herb problems.
7.8           Attending to herb-related questions, documenting customer suggestions, requests, and complaints, investigating employee grievances, and endeavoring to enhance customer satisfaction and harmony among workers.
7.10        Completing the daily/weekly operations report documenting the progress of herb operations; labor efficiency and problems, disease, work schedules, and any unusual circumstances.
7.11        Administering meetings and the employee suggestion system for the dept.
7.12        Training a back-up employee for this position.
7.13        Performing other duties including any of the herb crew tasks, as needed.

 

8.0           Performance Measurements

8.1           The herb operations schedule is developed in advance and always implemented.
8.2           Critical processes such as planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting are planned and assigned in an effective manner.
8.3           Assigned herb operations are completed on schedule and waste of plants, labor and supplies is minimized.
8.4           Herb yields are consistently maintained at high levels.
8.5           Herb gardens are well cared for, plant diseases and weeds are under control, and growth conditions are good.
8.6           Keeps good record of herb growth status.
8.7           Operations reports are completed promptly and accurately indicating labor used, schedule, performance, employee count, problems encountered, issues still pending, resolved, disease problems, next step needed, issues that need urgent attention, etc.
8.8           Employee evaluations are conducted regularly and in a timely manner and employee happiness and productivity are maintained consistently at high levels.
8.9           Consistently shows ability to recognize and deal with priorities; demonstrates good judgment and planning skills.
8.10        Satisfactorily resolves customer and employee complaints; unresolved problems are presented with a suggested solution to the Field Manager
8.11        Employee training is administered effectively and has trained/is in the process of training a back-up employee for this position.
