JOBS AND HOUSING

Our business has grown rapidly and has become very popular on Martha’s Vineyard. We have a large and supportive following in a very good market area. Our employees have been instrumental in building our good reputation and they have enjoyed being part of the growth of a quality farm business.

We have more than 100 employees during the summer. Wages vary according to experience. Employment should be considered on a trial basis for the first two weeks. Our veteran employees have earned periodic raises and increased responsibilities as appropriate.

Two 27′ x 96′ greenhouses supply transplants for the field such as lettuce, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, and vegetable and herb plants for sale. Several employees work in this area. We also grow tomatoes in two other 27' x 96' greenhouses trellised in natural soil that can be harvested by late May.

Our farm kitchen and bakery get busier every year so now we need about 10-20 people, on various shifts from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., to bake the bread, muffins, and pies and prepare salads, soups, casseroles, pot pies, jams, and pickles, using our own produce, meat, and eggs as much as possible. We find endless opportunities for new, creative uses of fresh produce in our kitchen.

We can supply housing for up to 25 employees in the upstairs of the Barn, which has five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen with a washer and dryer, and the Bunkhouse, with similar accommodations. Both buildings have wi-fi. The housing costs a low monthly rental rate and every resident is required to help with the cleaning of the residence and live quietly and considerately. While we do provide beds for each resident, we do not provide linens or blankets and pillows.

All employees get a 25 percent discount on most items we sell, and vegetables we grow ourselves are free if in good supply and you pick it yourself on your time. We are looking for people who want to work hard, enjoy the company of their fellow workers, produce a worthwhile product, enjoy the outdoors (rain or shine), and apply their energies to the success of our cause.

Each year we are particularly careful to keep only extraordinarily good workers. We cannot afford to keep anyone who is only doing a mediocre job or who demonstrates by his/her attitude that he/she is not enthusiastic about our work. Good workers will find themselves in excellent company.

I sure miss spending my days outside with the field crew. I learned a great deal working at Morning Glory Farm and I think about my positive experiences there quite frequently. I admire your hard work, dedication, and active role in the community.

— L.

My experience at the farm was one of the most rewarding of my life made especially so by the caring, fair, professional guidance of you & Debbie & the excellent group of young people you hire. … The people I met were a terrific side benefit not to mention the wonderful fruits and vegetables we enjoyed.

Often, at the end of a season when our employees depart the farm, they write us letters. Here are some excerpts that may give you a sense of what it’s like to work at Morning Glory:

I was very impressed with all of you and respect the way you run your business. From your family to each and every person employed by you I only experienced kindness. I’ve never seen such great team work and it had been a long time since I had worked with so many positive happy employees. You have something special going for sure. I am grateful to have been a part of it all.

— W., 2018

Not only have I enjoyed the job, but I have learned so much from it and my love and appreciation for the outdoors has grown significantly. In fact, I recently decided that I will be studying environmental science when I move on to college.

— M., 2007

I could not find cheaper housing and OH MY DAY I could not even DREAM of finding another group of people I appreciate as much as I do the barn mates I had this summer
